Fields of harvest

imageMark 4:26-29

And he said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how. The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”

When I read this passage this morning, I didn’t think much of it. God spreads the seeds and then harvests when it’s time to harvest. Pretty straight forward.

But something kept bugging me about this passage. Jesus wouldn’t say something for me to just skim over. So I read it again. God scatters the seeds and then waits for days for the seeds to ripen. The earth produces by itself the grain and then He harvests the crop.

When I looked at this passage again I couldn’t help but marvel. God sprinkles the seeds, we grow, God harvests. But did you see that he knows not how the seeds grow. God allows us the free will to grow or not. I love Him for that.

Now as dads aren’t we doing the same thing with our kids. We plant seeds on what they should or shouldn’t do, but ultimately it’s up to them to choose. Hopefully if we are planting the correct seeds we will see our kids ripen into a great harvest.

Some of the seeds I’m planting in my kids is the ability to disagree without yelling. If you read one of my previous posts you’d know I am working on yelling myself. So far so good in that field. But every dad knows there are many areas we want to see growth in our kids. Those fields may be respect, or compassion. Maybe it’s loving your neighbor, or saying hi to the lonely kid. Whatever the field, scatter the seeds dad.

Just remember this dad’s, we know not how, but the harvest will come eventually. Our kids have many different fields to scatter seeds, but they will grow in their own time. God is doing the same thing with all of us too. Planting seeds in us so when the harvest is ready in us we can plant seeds into our kids.

Whatever seeds God’s planted in you, just know that eventually He’s going to harvest.

Keep looking toward the harvest Dads!
