Dad’s Monday Movie – Dinosaur

So I thought I’d make monday’s movie review, dad style. Since having my 3 kids the movies I watch has changed dramatically. Most of the movies my kids watch are either Disney or Dreamworks with a little bit of Veggie Tails mixed in. So today, as my youngest son is home sick, we are watching Disney’s movie Dinosaur.

Dinosaur is a movie with both computer animation and real life scenery. It was made around 2000 and the graphics are actually pretty good for that time. (Man I feel old) The movie has shots of beautiful cliffs, sweeping coastlines, colorful jungles, harsh deserts, and awesome caves. The molding of real life shots with animation is very well done.

The movie stars a plant eating dinosaur named Aladar who is raised by monkeys. They live on an island until a big meteor hits and destroys their home. As they look for a new home they run into a herd of dinosaurs that look like Aladar and quickly learn that teamwork isn’t highly valued among them. Leaving sick or weak dinosaurs behind saves the herd from being attacked by meat eating dinosaurs. Survival of the strongest is the main way of life in the herd.

Over time most of the dinosaurs realize that just mindlessly following a herd is a dangerous way to live. Through hard work and putting his faith in hope Aladar is able to teach the herd that teamwork will help everyone in the herd, not just the strongest.

As I watch this movie with my kids, I’m glad I’m able to teach my kids that following a herd isn’t the way to live their lives. Following friends that do not have values such as teamwork, faith, and hope may not be in their best interest.  1 Thessalonians 5:14 And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all.

When asked why my kids like this movie my youngest son stated, “Cause dinosaurs are big and cool and big and I like dinosaurs.” When I asked my daughter she stated, “I like the dinosaurs, yep.” (Not bad for a 2 year old)

Don’t worry dads, Dinosaur is not like Jurassic Park with blood and guts. It’s Disney remember.

God bless Dads and enjoy, not just the movie, but the time together with your kids.
