A walk with God

imageAs I was reading a devotional today entitled To Walk With God by Andrew Murray I thought how I truly need to set aside my constant attempts to make myself better and just spend time in fellowship with God. When I read this I was overtaken by how much I pray for myself. Not that praying for yourself is a bad thing, but how I tend to pray for strength to be a better dad. In that prayer I forget to hand over the reins and trust in God to strengthen me.

I read this from the book How great is our God – Classic writing from history’s greatest christian thinkers. It’s a great devotional book, but it’s also awesome to see how christians throughout time have shared the same struggles as I do today. Check it out, it’s a great read.

Andrew Murray (1828-1917) was a South African writer, teacher, and Christian pastor.

Matthew 6:6
But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

“Christian! There is a terrible danger of substituting prayer and Bible study for living fellowship with God. Your needs, your desire to pray humbly and earnestly, may so occupy you, that the light of His countenance and the joy of His love cannot enter you. Your Bible study may so interest you, and waken pleasing religious sentiment, that – yes – the very Word of God may become a substitute for God Himself, keeping the soul occupied instead of leading it to God Himself.

What a difference it would make in the life of many, if everything in the closet were subordinate to this one thing: I want through the day to walk with God; God has taken charge of me, He is going with me Himself; I am going to do His will all day in His strength; I am ready for all that may come. Yes, what if secret prayer were not only an asking for some new sense of comfort, light, or strength, but the giving away of life just for one day into the sure and safe keeping of a mighty and faithful God.” – Andrew Murray  (How great is our God – Classic writing from history’s greatest christian thinkers pg. 78)

Dad’s I hope this encourage’s you today to hand over the reins and let God lead you on a walk.
